2020 World Series Matchup Set
The 2020 World Series matchup is set, and it will be the Tampa Bay Rays taking on the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Each team survived a seven-game championship series to reach the final series of the 2020 season.
This is just the fourth time since 1995 that the two teams with the best record in their respective league will square off in the Fall Classic. Tampa Bay finished with the best record in the American League, while the Dodgers finished with the best record in the National League.
Los Angeles technically has home-field advantage in this matchup, but the entire series will be played at Globe Life Park in Arlington, Texas. This is the first neutral-site World Series in Major League Baseball history, but there will be fans in attendance.
The Tampa Bay Rays eliminated the Houston Astros in a thrilling Game 7 after blowing a 3-0 series lead. Tampa Bay is in the World Series for just the second time in franchise history.
Tampa Bay made it to the 2008 World Series as the American League East champion. The Rays lost in five games to the Philadelphia Phillies that season.
If the Rays are able to win the 2020 World Series, it will be another victory for a small-market franchise. Tampa Bay has the fifth-best overall record since the 2008 season.
Los Angeles was staring at a 3-1 series deficit to the Atlanta Braves in the National League Championship Series, but the Dodgers responded by winning three straight games. This is the third World Series appearance for Los Angeles in the last four years.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have 12 players on their roster that have been named to an All-Star team, for a total of 26 appearances. Tampa Bay has just four players with All-Star Game experience, and the team has a total of just five appearances.
Los Angeles has won eight straight National League West Division titles, but the franchise is still looking for its first World Series title since 1988.
Randy Arozarena was named MVP of the ALCS for the Tampa Bay Rays, while Corey Seager won the NLCS MVP Award for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Plenty of Pitching Lined Up
Even though both teams have terrific offensive lineups, pitching is expected to dominate the 2020 World Series. The Los Angeles Dodgers have a huge edge in starting pitching, but the Tampa Bay Rays have one of the best bullpens of the last decades.
Clayton Kershaw will likely make the start for the Dodgers in Game 1 for the Dodgers, and he will be looking to turn his postseason career around. Kershaw is just 11-12 with a 4.31 ERA during his playoff career and suffered a loss to the Atlanta Braves in the NLCS.
Charlie Morton will likely start Game 3 for the Tampa Bay Rays after winning Game 7 of the American League Championship Series. Morton became the first pitcher in baseball history to win three Game 7s during his career.
