Football came back with a bang last week as there were upsets, intrigue, injuries and incidents aplenty in an action packed week 1. It has been said that you can’t determine much from the first week of the NFL season, as teams are still finding out about themselves and you always get unexpected results. That may come as a relief for Chiefs and Giants fans, in particular. The Vikings and Kirk Cousins will be looking to bounce back after a disappointing opening home loss to the Buccaneers. Justin Jefferson was as impressive as ever (9 recs, 150 yards) and he will need to be again if they are to put up a fight against the Eagles. Both of these teams reached the playoffs last year but the Eagles looked in ominous form in week 1, despatching the Patriots with relative ease. Many have tipped the Eagles to reach the Super Bowl for the second year running and they should have too much for the Vikings in this one.

Perhaps one of the biggest shocks of the opening week was the Bengals getting blown out at the Cleveland Browns. Joe Burrow looked flustered all afternoon and talk of his troublesome calf will now intensify. The Ravens took care of business in week 1 in a game they were expected to win at home to the Texans, with rookie Zay Flowers impressing. This one could be close.

This NFC West division matchup sees two of the best performing teams of week 1 clash. The 49ers were extremely impressive on the road with a 30-7 against the Steelers. Brock Purdy answered any lingering questions about his health following offseason surgery as he threw for 220 yards. Christian McCaffrey also put up impressive numbers, running for 152 yards with 1 TD. They already look formidable and welcome a Rams team that picked up an impressive win of their own in week 1 in Seattle. Many tipped the Rams to struggle this year, but Kyren Williams put on a show in that week 1 win and they may surprise a few.

Well well well, Patrick Mahomes suffered the first season-opening defeat of his amazing NFL career at home the Lions. There were mitigating circumstances. Namely superstar tight end Travis Kelce missing the game through injury while one of the best defensive tackles in the game, Chris Jones, was watching from the stands as he continues his holdout over a new contract. The early reports indicate Kelce will be good to go against the Jags, and he will be needed. Jacksonville’s offense looked great against the Colts. QB Trevor Lawrence continues his ascent and it was a fantastic return for WR Calvin Ridley, whose stat line read 8 recs, 101 yards, 1TD.

Oh dear oh dear. Aaron Rodgers arrival in New York had fuelled Super Bowl talk in Gotham, but the four-time MVP left the field injured on his first drive in a Jets uniform. This was not how it was supposed to go this year for the Jets or A-Rod, as fans watched on in disbelief. To their credit, the Jets still secured a dramatic victory over the Bills in overtime, thanks largely to an amazing defensive effort and a wonderous catch from Garrett Wilson. However, their season no doubt now has a different outlook with Zach Wilson under center. As always, lots of people debated if the Cowboys are for real this year all summer. They certainly looked the part in week 1, with an absolute demolition job on the other New York club, the Giants, winning 40-0. The stars will be out for this one.
