Arizona Sports Betting Legislation
Sports Betting Legislation has been signed into law in Arizona as FanDuel gets market access.
Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey has put pen to paper and signed a sports betting and fantasy sports legislation into law. The signature occurred at The Heard Museum in Phoenix and is a historic moment for the Grand Canyon State. Not long after this news was revealed, the Phoenix Suns and FanDuel announced a multiyear market access agreement. This landmark partnership means FanDuel will become the Suns’ Official Sportsbook and Daily Fantasy Sports Partner.
As part of the deal, the sports betting company will open a retail sportsbook inside the Phoenix Suns Arena. This sportsbook is expected to open in time for the start of the 2021-22 NBA season.
Sports betting is moving forward in Arizona after the state Senate passed SB 1797, a bill to legalize event wagering and daily fantasy sports. The bill passed by a margin of 23-6-1, which meant it proceeded to Ducey, who had thrown his weight behind the legislation, for his signature. Upon his signature, a 20-year extension of tribal compacts in the state kicks in.
Tribal leaders and legislators accompanied Ducey for the signing ceremony at the Heard Museum, which is dedicated to advancing American Indian art. Ducey described the signing event as “a very special occasion and celebration in Arizona’s history.” The Governor commented on the successful history between the tribal nations and the state in Arizona and added that this new legislation marks the “new continuation of this storied partnership.”
The Arizona Department of Gaming will be responsible for creating sports betting regulations, including a tax rate before it can approve the launch of sports betting operators. Lawmakers have announced that they hope online sports betting will start before the launch of the new NFL season in September.
FanDuel Signs Deal for Market Access
FanDuel joins other fantasy sports giant DraftKings, who revealed they had signed an access deal with the PGA Tour in the Arizona market. Both agreements are subject to approval from state regulators.
Phoenix Suns President & CEO Jason Rowley described the deal as a “watershed moment for the Suns organization and our fans.” He said FanDuel was the “perfect partner” as their beliefs and missions are “fully aligned.” Rowley believes the sports betting company is “committed to making sports more exciting” while the Suns are focused on providing entertainment and “engaging fans at the highest level possible.”
As well as self-service kiosks and a full-service ticket window within the sportsbook, fans will be able to place wagers throughout Phoenix Suns Arena on their mobile betting apps during games. Per the terms of the deal, the Suns and FanDuel will collaborate on a series of responsible gambling education activities. FanDuel has agreed to become part of the America Gaming Association’s national drive to promote the fundamentals of responsible sports betting entitled, ‘Have A Game Plan.’
