Arizona Reveals Target Date for Sports Betting
Arizona has set an aims to have sports betting up and ready by September 9.
The Arizona Department of Gaming has revealed the target date for the launch of legal sports betting in the Grand Canyon State. The goal is for sports betting in Arizona to be live on September 9. This date coincides with the beginning of the 2021 NFL season, as the Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers host the Dallas Cowboys. In addition, the Arizona Cardinals kick off their 2021 campaign against the Tennessee Titans on September 12.
Additionally, an initial draft of the rules and regulations for sports betting in the state will be available for public scrutiny and comment on June 14. The public inspection period will last for a week, ending on June 21.
Following that, the ADG will have an amendment period where they have the opportunity to file any amended rules as necessary. All of this paves the way for the opening night of the NFL season as a tentative start date.
Sportsbook Deals in Arizona
There are currently three online sportsbooks, DraftKings, Caesars, and FanDuel, that have announced they have agreed to partnerships in the state. In April, before Governor Ducey signed the legislation, DraftKings revealed they would expand their existing partnership with the PGA Tour to provide the sports betting operator market access for retail and mobile sports wagering in Arizona.
Just a day later, rival operator FanDuel and the Phoenix Suns announced a multi-year partnership. This saw FanDuel become the daily fantasy partner and named as their official sportsbook. In addition, FanDuel will also open a retail sportsbook inside the Phoenix Suns Arena. This is expected to officially open for the start of the 2021-22 NBA season.
Additionally, in May, the Arizona Diamondbacks and Caesars Entertainment announced an agreement for a physical sportsbook and mobile sports betting on the plaza adjacent to Chase Field in downtown Phoenix.
Ducey Signs Legislation
On April 15, Gov. Doug Ducey signed legislation and the amended tribal-State Gaming Compacts. This move legalized sports betting and daily fantasy sports contests in the state. The law in Arizona permits 20 sports betting licenses. Ten could potentially go to Arizona professional sports teams, while gaming tribes will definitely receive ten.
Additionally, this legislation requires sports betting operators and daily fantasy sports contests to provide constant support for anyone who may have a gambling problem. It gives individuals the opportunity to exclude themselves from the new forms of legal wagering statewide.
The U.S. Department of Interior announced in May that it had approved the amended Arizona tribal-state gaming compact.
