Betts, Dodgers Agree To Massive Deal
There was a time when fans of the Los Angeles Dodgers feared that they would never get to see Mookie Betts in a Dodgers uniform.
Now that the 2020 season is set to begin on Thursday, that is no longer the case, but Betts is also set to be in a Dodgers uniform for more than a decade.
Betts and the Dodgers agreed to a 12-year contract extension worth $365 million that will keep the former American League MVP in Los Angeles for years to come. Betts was acquired by the Dodgers in a blockbuster trade this past winter, but the team will not let the prized prospect reach free agency again.
The deal that was reached includes a record $65 million signing bonus, which breaks the previous record set by Mike Trout. The contract extension also breaks the previous record set by Trout as Betts is now eligible to receive $392 million by the Dodgers.
Most experts expected that Betts would test free agency after the 2020 regular season, and there were expected to be several suitors for his services. Betts has expressed his love for the city of Los Angeles, and the Dodgers were able to lock him up to a long term deal.
Los Angeles took a huge gamble when trading for Betts this winter as they gave up Alex Verdugo and prized prospect, Jeter Downs. The Dodgers were expected to only get Betts for one year, but the team was able to strike a deal quickly.
Part of the reason that Betts agreed to a deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers was the unclear financial future of Major League Baseball. MLB teams are expected to suffer huge losses due to the coronavirus pandemic, and the free agency market is expected to be much different at the end of the 2020 regular season.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have one of the best rosters in the league, but they have plenty of financial flexibility after the 2022 season. Los Angeles has not shied away from signing big-name players in the past to put their best team on the field.
FanDuel Sportsbook Loves the Dodgers
The Los Angeles Dodgers are the massive betting favorites at FanDuel Sportsbook when it comes to which team will win the 2020 World Series. FanDuel Sportsbook has the Dodgers at +380 to win the title, which is just ahead of the New York Yankees at +400.
FanDuel Sportsbook has the Los Angeles Dodgers at -500 to win the National League West, and the sportsbook doesn’t really view any other teams as true competitors. The Dodgers have dominated the division in recent years, and that shouldn’t change even though this season is just 60 games.
Another popular way to bet on the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020 is to bet on the projected win total that is set at FanDuel Sportsbook. FanDuel has set the over/under for total Dodgers wins at 37.5 wins, which is easily the highest total among all teams in baseball.
