Braves Lose Acuna Jr. to injury
The 2021 season has not gone well for the Atlanta Braves, and it appears that the team might have hit rock bottom on Saturday.
Superstar outfielder, Ronald Acuna Jr suffered a torn ACL and will miss the remainder of the season.
Acuna has carried the Braves on offense for much of the season, and this loss will affect many teams in the days leading up to the MLB Trade Deadline. Atlanta picked up a 5-4 win over Miami on Saturday, but that was not the biggest headline from this game.
The injury occurred as Acuna was attempting to track down a ball hit by Jazz Chisholm Jr. in the fifth inning. Acuna made a leaping attempt at the ball and landed awkwardly on his right leg.
Chisholm was able to circle the bases on the play for an inside-the-park home run, but he did so as Acuna was laying on the warning track in pain. Acuna attempted to walk off the field under his own power but was ultimately removed from the field on a cart.
The Braves medical staff and members of the team were all gathered around Acuna as he waiting for the cart to arrive. Tears could be seen streaming down the outfielders face, and it became clear that this was a pretty serious injury.
Acuna is hitting .283 with 24 long balls and 52 RBIs this season, and he was named a starter for the National League All-Star team. Atlanta currently sits in second place in the NL East behind the New York Mets.
It didn’t take long for the MRI results to return after the game, and the team confirmed it was a complete tear of the ACL. Acuna Jr. is scheduled to undergo surgery in the coming days, and the team is hopeful that he will make a return for Spring Training 2022.
There has been a lot of highs and lows for the team this season. The arrest of Marcell Ozuna back in May was another low point for the team.
All-Star Game Replacements Coming
The announcing of the MLB All-Star Game starters and reserves is a big day for the league, but there is always plenty of changes made leading up to the game. This latest injury to Acuna will force the league to name another replacement, and it has been a busy week in that respect.
On Saturday, MLB announced that St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina had been named to the National League as a replacement to Buster Posey. Less than two hours later, Molina announced that he would be skipping the game to nurse an injury.
Starting pitchers have to be replaced every single year as the league only wants those pitchers that are rested and healthy to be on the field. Major League Baseball still has some work to do on Sunday to get the invitations sent out to those players that are eligible to participate.
The MLB All-Star Game is set for Tuesday night in Denver, Colorado, and some of the game’s biggest stars will be on the field. Losing Acuna is a huge blow to the Braves, but it is also a blow to fans that were hoping to watch him in the All-Star Game.
