Kansas City Chiefs Clinch Top Seed in AFC
The Kansas City Chiefs have earned the top seed in the AFC after defeating the Atlanta Falcons, 17-14 on Sunday.
Things didn’t come easy for the Chiefs in the Week 16 win, but quarterback Patrick Mahomes once again made the big plays when he needed to.
With the win, the Chiefs have now won 10 straight games since a loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. This is the second time in three seasons that the Chiefs have earned the top overall seed in the AFC, but in 2018, they fell to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game at home.
Earlier this month, the Chiefs wrapped up their fifth straight AFC West championship. Now the road to the Super Bowl in the AFC will go through Arrowhead Stadium, but this time, the stadium won’t be filled with Chiefs fans.
With the new expanded playoff format in the NFL this season, each conference will have just one bye. Kansas City will wait around to see who its divisional-round opponent will be, and there are still a number of possible options.
Tight end Travis Kelce also set a few records in the victory and cemented himself as one of the best players at his position of all-time. Kelce is the first tight end in NFL history to have two seasons with at least 100 receptions.
The Kansas City star also set a new record for receiving yards by a tight end in one season with 1,467 yards. The previous record was held by George Kittle of the San Francisco 49ers when he racked up 1,377 yards in 2018.
Kansas City will wrap up the regular season next week at home against the Los Angeles Chargers. Now that the top overall seed has already been locked up, several starters will likely sit the season finale out.
Jaguars ‘Earn’ No. 1 Pick
On the other end of the spectrum, the Jacksonville Jaguars clinched the No. 1 overall draft pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Jacksonville suffered a 41-17 loss to the Chicago Bears on Sunday, but the Jaguars still needed some help to clinch on this day.
The New York Jets shocked the NFL world by winning their second straight game against the Cleveland Browns. New York looked like a lock for the No. 1 draft pick just two weeks ago, but the team continues to hurt the future by winning meaningless games.
Jacksonville started the season with an upset win over the Indianapolis Colts, but 14 straight losses now have it on the clock for the 2021 NFL Draft. Quarterback is a huge need for the Jaguars, and the 2021 draft class is loaded at that position.
Clemson Tigers quarterback Trevor Lawrence is widely considered the top overall pick, and the Jaguars will be in position to select him in April. This could also be a great thing for Lawrence, as there were reports that he was not interested in playing for the New York Jets.
