After a few weeks of speculation and rumors, the Atlanta Falcons have officially agreed to trade wide receiver Julio Jones to the Tennessee Titans.

News of this trade broke on Sunday morning, but the deal will not be made official until Jones passes a physical with his new team.

Atlanta will be receiving a second-round draft pick in the 2022 NFL Draft and a fourth-round selection in the 2023 Draft. The Titans will be receiving a 2023 sixth-round draft pick along with the future Hall of Fame wide receiver.

The Titans will now look to restructure contracts for some players that are currently on the roster in an effort to get under the salary cap. General manager Jon Robinson said in a statement that the team is not looking to make any roster cuts.

Several members of the Titans team have been recruiting Jones on social media over the last few weeks, but the Falcons apparently had several other teams interested. According to Robinson, the Titans and Falcons started to heat up their discussions on Saturday, and a final agreement was reached on Sunday.

Jones has a base salary of more than $15 million, and that is fully guaranteed money. The Falcons were on the hook for more than $23 million this season, but trading him after June 1 will give them some financial flexibility this season.

According to NFL insiders, Jones requested a trade from the team early in the 2021 offseason, and the Falcons were looking for potential suitors behind the scenes. On May 24, Jones appeared via phone conversation on FS1 and announced that his days in Atlanta were over.

Tennessee was looking for more help on offense after Corey Davis and Jonnu Smith both left the team via free agency this offseason. By adding Jones to the roster, the odds for the Tennessee Titans to win the Super Bowl shortened from +3500 to +3000.

Jones Left His Mark With Falcons

Julio Jones has been one of the faces of the Atlanta Falcons franchise for close to a decade after he was selected as the sixth overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. Atlanta traded away several draft picks that year to acquire the former Alabama product and ended up getting one of the best wide receivers in NFL history.

During his career, Jones has averaged 95.5 receiving yards per game, which is the NFL record. Calvin Johnson of the Detroit Lions is next on the list, but he averaged just 86.1 yards per game.

Jones has recorded 848 receptions for 12,896 yards during his Falcons career, and both are franchise records. He is second in career touchdown catches with Atlanta, trailing only Roddy White.

Injuries have plagued the future Hall of Famer over the last few seasons, and he appeared in just nine games during the 2020 season. Jones still averaged 15.1 yards per catch but posted his worst overall numbers since his second year in the league.

Calvin Ridley will now become the top wide receiver with the Falcons and will have to become quarterback Matt Ryan’s new favorite target.
