FanDuel to open Retail Sportsbook at Delta Downs Casino in Louisiana
A new FanDuel retail sportsbook has opened its doors inside a Louisiana casino and racetrack near the Texas border. The opening ceremony will see former Dallas Cowboys star Randy White place the first wager at the new facility. Last week, the Louisiana Gaming Control Board granted Delta Downs Racetrack Casino Hotel in Vinton an on-site retail sportsbook license.
That approval set the wheels in motion for this week’s opening ceremony and first retail bet from White, who is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame known as the “Manster.”
The Delta Downs license is one of five casino sportsbooks that received approval from the control board last week. This took the number of Louisiana sportsbooks inside commercial casinos to 13 across the state. At least two more on-site sportsbook approvals are expected to be given over the next few weeks.
Neighboring Texas Boosts Lake Charles Areas Casinos
The Delta Downs resort is in southwestern Louisiana, a short car ride from the Texas border. Because it is so close to Texas, the Lake Charles-area casino market, which includes Vinton, is the busiest gaming area in the Pelican State.
Sports betting remains illegal in Texas, and the state does not have any casinos. Lake Charles is around 2 hours from Houston, the fourth largest city in the US, behind only Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York City in population size.
Mobile Sports Betting in Louisiana on Track to go live in 2022
In Louisiana, there are 13 riverboat casinos that are operational in conjunction with one land-based commercial casino in New Orleans. Additionally, there are four racinos in the state.
Evangeline Downs Racetrack Casino Hotel in Opelousas and the horse track in Vinton have also been granted licenses to operate on-site sportsbooks. Both of these properties are owned by Nevada-based Boyd Gaming.
Although sportsbooks inside Louisiana casinos have been opening for over a month, mobile sports betting won’t launch until early next year. Louisiana State Police troopers are in the middle of investigating online operators that have applied for licenses. It is hoped that the first online sportsbooks will be operational by January, although mobile sportsbooks might not be live until February.
