Los Angeles Chargers at Oakland Raiders Betting Preview
The NFL season is heating up, and there are a number of spots still up for grabs in the AFC playoff race. While the NFC is looking like double-digit wins are going to be necessary to compete, the AFC is hard-pressed to find the six best teams for its side.
Game time: Thursday, November 7th @ 8:20pm
Two teams in one of the stronger divisions will be headlining our Thursday Night Football matchup when the Los Angeles Chargers go on the road to take on the Oakland Raiders. The two teams have swapped places based on experts’ preseason expectations, but they are both still poised to make a run.
Let’s break down the matchup between these two and help you make the call for your best bets for the upcoming NFL week.
The Chargers Were A Sad Story
Ever since the Chargers moved their team to Los Angeles, they have been the little brother of the Rams and everything else that is present in Hollywood. Their home games are played in a stadium that seats around 30,000, and most of them are filled with fans from the visiting team.
Philip Rivers has looked washed up this season, and there is no backup plan in place to replace him. They also had to deal with top running back Melvin Gordon holding out the first five weeks of the season, and have injuries on all levels of defense.
Nearly every game they have comes down to the final seconds, either in a comeback staged by Rivers or a team-wide collapse.
But this last weekend changed everything. The Chargers took on the Packers at home where plenty of cheeseheads were present. The Packers had been unstoppable, but the Chargers dominated them from the opening kickoff.
Gordon finally looked like the running back we knew in the past, and the defense sacked Aaron Rodgers multiple times. The Packers wanted nothing to do with the Chargers in this matchup. Los Angeles now looks like it could make a run at the sixth seed in the playoffs.
The Cinderella Story We Have Been Waiting For
When Jon Gruden took over the Raiders a season ago, many questioned his decision-making after trading away Khalil Mack and Amari Cooper.
A year later, it looks like the Raiders had the strongest draft in 2019, headlined by running back Josh Jacobs, who looks like he could be a real threat for many years in the NFL. Gruden has his boys playing well, and this matchup Thursday is just as important for them as it is for Los Angeles.
Derek Carr has been the ultimate game manager at quarterback. He has taken a back seat to Jacobs and let him take over games as a perfect three-down back. Carr gets the job done otherwise, and the AFC West looks stronger than ever.
The Raiders have lacked a pass-rush, and that could pose a problem on Thursday night, but they have already surpassed expectations. Both of these teams have a strong chance of making Wild Card games in January.
After all of the turmoil to start the season, the Chargers head into Thursday night as a road favorite in this divisional matchup. They are favored at -1.5 over the Raiders.
Los Angeles clearly has more talent on both sides of the ball, but I think the Raiders are better coached. What was perfect for the Chargers was the season debut of kicker Michael Badgely, who came up huge in the game against the Packers.
I like the Chargers to keep rolling in this matchup on the road. They were a preseason favorite, and I think it is time to get back on track.
Make sure to lock in your bets before Thursday night!
