Michigan Sports Betting Sets Record in September

The return of the NFL has proven to be a massive boost for sportsbooks across the United States. Indiana and Illinois reported all-time monthly highs in sports betting handles in September, while other states have seen a considerable increase in betting activity compared to the slow months over the summer.

Michigan recorded its own record monthly handle in September, posting numbers of $386.8 million, an increase of 85.4% from August’s $208.6 million. The previous record was posted in March 2021, when the state took in $383.7 million in bets.

The online sports betting handle in the Wolverine State was $354.3 million, a jump of 84.2% from August’s $192.3 million. The figures posted in September ended two straight months when the state failed to reach the $200 million mark in internet sports betting handle.

The three commercial casinos in Detroit experienced nearly double the action in September compared to August. The total handle for September was $32.5 million, up 99.7% from August’s $16.3 million.

The total adjusted sports betting gross gaming revenue was $3.5 million ($3,462,563 retail, $17,399 online), which was down 62.2% from August’s $9.2 million ($7.6 million online, $1.7 million retail).

DraftKings Remains the Leader

August was the first month in which another operator surpassed perennial leader FanDuel in terms of the highest monthly handle.

The DraftKings Sportsbook overtook FanDuel in August and remained at the top for another month. DraftKings took in $106.9 million worth of wagers, while FanDuel ($82.1 million) and BetMGM ($81.8 million) completed the top three.

Although being overtaken in the league table, FanDuel still managed to post the highest adjusted gross sports betting receipts at $3.2 million. DraftKings lost $4.7 million while the BetMGM Sportsbook was at $2.7 million.

After experiencing a monthly handle decrease for six consecutive months, the Barstool sportsbook rebounded with $29.5 million in September handle after dropping to just $13.1 million in August. The figures for Barstool in September were the third-highest handle for the operator since it launched in Michigan.

Caesars sportsbook completed the top five with a handle of $23.9 million. The previous highest total for Caesars came when it was under the William Hill branding in March.
