Milwaukee Brewers beati the Chicago Cubs to clinch playoff berth
The Milwaukee Brewers officially clinched a playoff berth on Saturday night after beating the Chicago Cubs by a score of 6-4.
Milwaukee is now the third team in the National League playoff field, but it could be a while before the final two spots are decided.
Milwaukee now has their magic number to clinch the NL Central Division all the way down to three, and they have been leading the division by a wide margin for weeks. The Brewers beat the Cubs for the 11th straight time on Saturday night, and are 15-3 against their rivals this season.
This is the fourth straight postseason trip for the Milwaukee Brewers, but the franchise hasn’t had a ton of postseason success. Milwaukee is a team that has been winning games with starting pitching, and that could bode well for the playoffs.
Earlier in the week, the San Francisco Giants became the first NL team to clinch a playoff berth. The Giants currently hold a two-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West, and they have been leading that division from early in the season.
The Dodgers also clinched a playoff berth earlier this week, but they are hoping to get into the postseason as a division champion. Los Angeles is the defending World Series champion, but playing in the Wild Card Playoff would add a degree of difficulty if they are looking to repeat.
In the American League, the Chicago White Sox have a magic number of just five games to clinch a playoff berth, and they should be the first to reach the postseason. The Tampa Bay Rays and Houston Astros likely won’t be too far behind.
Wild Card Races Heating Up
Major League Baseball was looking to add some excitement and intrigue to its regular season a few years ago when it added an additional Wild Card spot. With five teams now getting in the postseason each year, it has allowed more teams to stay in the playoff race until the final days of the season.
The National League has one spot up for grabs, and there are four teams within 2.5 games of the second Wild Card. The St. Louis Cardinals have jumped into the lead in the race, but the Cincinnati Reds, San Diego Padres, and Philadelphia Phillies are all keeping the pressure on.
The American League Wild Card race is even more crowded than the National League, especially when it comes to teams from the AL East Division. The New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, and Toronto Blue Jays are all chasing the Tampa Bay Rays, and two of these teams could get in the playoffs via the wild card.
The 2021 MLB Playoffs are set to begin on October 5 with the AL Wild Card Game, followed by the NL Wild Card Game on that next day. Game 7 of the 2021 MLB World Series is scheduled for November 3, assuming the season would get to that point.
