MLB Playoff Field is Set: Countdown to the postseason
Major League Baseball wrapped up the 2021 regular season on Sunday afternoon, and there were a handful of meaningful games on the schedule.
Adding a second Wild Card spot in both leagues has created tremendous drama in MLB since it became official, but this was one of the wildest final days in memory.
There were four teams in the American League that were vying for the two Wild Card spots and neither were claimed until Sunday. The National League had all five playoff teams locked, but there was still the top seed that needed to be determined.
Major League Baseball was able to successfully navigate through the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021 to complete a full schedule for each team. There were some challenges that popped up along the way, but there was never a long pause for the entire league or for any specific teams.
Now the real fun begins as 10 teams will be competing to win the World Series in 2021. Fans will be back in the stadiums at every round of the postseason, and teams will be hosting games in their own ballparks.
The Los Angeles Dodgers are the defending World Series champions, but they will have nine other teams ready to knock them off over the next month.
Yankees-Red Sox in Wild Card Ga,me
The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees will meet up in the AL Wild Card Game to be played on Tuesday, October 5. Boston will host the game over their arch rivals, and both teams were able to win on Sunday to lock themselves into the postseason field.
The winner of this game will advance to the ALDS to take on the Tampa Bay Rays, who won the AL East Division this season with 100 wins. Tampa Bay is the defending American League champion, and they cruised to another division title.
The other divisional series will feature the Houston Astros against the Chicago White Sox. The series will begin in Houston as the Astros were able to pick up two more wins than the White Sox during the regular season.
Giants Earn Top NL Seed
Even though all five of the playoff teams in the National League were decided earlier this week, there was still some drama on the final day of the regular season. The San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers have been in a tight race for the NL West Division title, and it came down to game 162.
Both the Giants and Dodgers were able to pick up a win in the season finale, and that meant that the Giants were able to win the division title by just one game. San Francisco is now the number one overall seed in the National League with 107 wins on the year.
Los Angeles will host the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Wild Card Game to be held on Wednesday night. That winner will then fly to San Francisco to meet up with the Giants in the NLDS.
The Milwaukee Brewers will host the Atlanta Braves for Game 1 of the other NLDS series. Milwaukee won 95 games during the regular season while Atlanta had 88 victories.
