Mohegan Sun Turns to Betfred to Run Sportsbook
Mohegan Sun Shines a light on Betfred to operate their new Vegas Sportsbook
Casino giant Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment has chosen Betfred USA to operate its imminent Las Vegas sportsbook. The sportsbook will be located in the Mohegan Sun Casino at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas when the venue is allowed to reopen in the fall. The announcement of this new strategic partnership follows Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment (MGE), unveiling the name and logo for its first Las Vegas destination. The sportsbook will be integrated Mohegan Sun Casino Las Vegas’ considerable gaming space and signifies the first tribal casino presence in the bright lights of the Vegas strip.
The agreement’s financial terms haven’t been released, and MGE didn’t mention any other sportsbook operators that may have been in the running. Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, formerly the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, is currently undergoing an eight-month renovation and remains on course to open in the fall despite the obvious construction challenges it has faced thanks to the Coronavirus outbreak.
Virgin owner and billionaire Richard Branson and Richard Bosworth’s real estate firms Juniper Capital Partners and Fengate Asset Management purchased the casino resort in 2018 for an undisclosed fee. They have revealed the estimated reconfiguration cost of the venue is $200 million.
Betfred Looks to Make Moves in the US
Several UK based operators, such as GVC Holdings Plc and William Hill, have already ventured into the US gambling market. Now Betfred is looking to do the same, recognizing that the United States is the fastest-growing sports betting market in the world.
This move strengthens Betfred’s position and comes after it was announced that the company became the official sportsbook partner of the Denver Broncos and is now licensed to operate in Iowa. Betfred is a well established British bookmaker and has been going since 1967.
The new Betfred-branded sportsbook will have over-the-counter wagering, luxury seating, and self-serve kiosks. This will be Betfred’s fourth US sportsbook following their presence in Iowa, Colorado, and Pennsylvania.
MGE Expands Operations
MGE operates numerous gaming properties across the United States, including Connecticut, Louisiana, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Washington. MGE is based out of Connecticut, which currently doesn’t have legal sports betting available. However, the company does offer a free-to-play sports game that is supported by the Kambi Group.
Other Mohegan Sun locations, such as Pennsylvania and Atlantic City, have Unibet as the sportsbook operator. Earlier this year, sports betting was legalized in Washington; however, MGE has not been mentioned as one of the tribes trying to obtain a license in that state.
Commenting on this new agreement, Aviram Alroy, vice president of interactive gaming at MGE, said they were “excited,” adding this partnership will see a “new and attractive competition to the Las Vegas market.” Betfred’s chief operating officer, Mark Stebbings, commented that the collaboration would result in “top class service for sports bettors in the entertainment capital of the world.”
