DraftKings Launches in Virginia
DraftKings has become the latest operator to launch in Virginia, and they will soon be joined by BetMGM.
The Virginia Lottery decided to approve DraftKings and BetMGM before the NFL Conference Championship games began. Daily Fantasy Sports betting giant DraftKings announced on Sunday that its platform was now accepting bets in Virginia. The online sports betting market was launched last Thursday in the Old Dominion State, with FanDuel becoming the first online sportsbook available for bettors. FanDuel was able to secure access into the VA sports betting market thanks to a partnership with the Washington Football Team.
Virginia was not the only state to launch online betting last week, as Michigan also introduced online sports betting on Friday. In announcing they were live in Virginia, DraftKings states on its social media channels that sports fans will now have “an abundance of betting options.” Additionally, DraftKings CEO Jason Robins stated the company has a “customer-first approach,” and they hope the sportsbook will be the go-to choice for Virginia bettors.

Football Most Popular Sport for Bettors
The first NFC Championship Game on Sunday was contested between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Green Bay Packers. This was followed by the AFC Championship Game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills. Now all eyes focus on the Super Bowl LV.
DraftKings conducted a consumer research study that revealed that Virginia sports fans are most likely to bet on the NFL. This may come as no surprise considering the coverage the sport receives both in the media and its growing popularity worldwide. According to the study, the next most prominent sport on the list is basketball, with NBA betting also prevalent. College football makes up the top three.
In terms of popular teams, the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Football Team are the two most favored NFL teams in Virginia. The most popular NBA teams among Virginia sports fans are the Washington Wizards, the L.A. Lakers, and the Chicago Bulls.
Before the Championship games on Sunday, DraftKings was offering a promotion to get some customers on board. The promotion provided users with a double your money opportunity if they wagered on any of the four teams participating to score a touchdown.
DraftKings Sportsbook has been one of the most prominent names in sports betting in the United States for a long time. The operator is primarily known for its regular Daily Fantasy Sports competitions but now offers numerous sports betting options and an online casino.
BetMGM is mostly known for its BetMGM online casino gaming, but the company now has a sportsbook active in eight states. Virginia will become the ninth after the company received approval last week; however, no date has been set when the platform will launch.
