There was plenty of turkey, touchdowns and thumping wins in the Thanksgiving week slate of games. For some franchises, we can see potential Super Bowl winners emerging as they jostle for the best seeding position in the conference. For some other franchises (cough, Patriots) it seems they are competing for the no1 selection in the 2024 NFL Draft rather than competing to actually win games.
Now that turkey day has been and gone, we are all in full on playoff mode. Who will come on strong and make a run, and who will fall by the wayside? The road to Vegas is there for lots of teams, who is going to grasp it?
NFL Thursday, November 30
Dallas Cowboys Seattle Seahawks
The Dallas Cowboys are rolling right now. In their traditional Thanksgiving day game, they wiped the floor with the Commanders, 45-10. Dak Prescott threw for 331 yards and 4 TDs, and it wasn’t just CeeDee Lamb who benefited this week. Running back Tony Pollard ran for 79 yards and a TD while receiver Brandin Cooks recorded 72 yards through the air and a TD. However, the biggest talking point from the game came from Dallas corner Daron Bland. Astonishingly, he claimed another pick-six, his fifth of the season, to break the record for the most pick-sixes of all time. He has recorded more TDs this season than some of the best receivers in the game. It speaks to how strong the Cowboys are and at 8-3, they are a serious contender. The same cannot be said for their week 13 opponents, the Seahawks. They were dismantled on home turf against arch rivals, the 49ers. Geno Smith is banged up and has not been able to reproduce what he did last season, with the offense completely stuck in the mud. Whether Smith plays this week or backup Drew Lock comes in, the Seahawks season looks to be unraveling.

NFL Sunday, December 3
Houston Texans Denver Broncos
The Texans have surprised everyone so far this season, led by superstar rookie Quarterback CJ Stroud. However, they enter week 13 off the back of a close loss to division rival the Jaguars, which was a bitter pill to swallow. Stroud continued to impress, throwing for 304 yards and 2 TDs and at this point is surely a lock for offensive rookie of the year. Receiver Nico Collins posted 104 yards and a TD as the Texans put up 21 points but just couldn’t get the job done. The good news is they are still firmly in the playoff hunt, which is quite a turnaround for a franchise that has been in the wilderness for too long. Another team returning to form is the Broncos. The Sean Payton redemption arc continues apace in Denver, as they defeated the Browns, 29-12, last week. Russell Wilson has been solid all season, Javonte Williams is punishing teams on the ground while Courtland Sutton has become a key weapon through the air. Add all of that to a very good defense and the Broncos are emerging as serious playoff contenders. Those early season struggles seem a distant memory.

Philadelphia Eagles San Francisco 49ers
Is this a potential NFC Championship game preview? You wouldn’t bet against it! This is a matchup that really gets the juices flowing. The Eagles won a pulsating game against the Bills last week, 37-34 after overtime. Yes, their defense gave up a lot of points and yards, but these Eagles never know when they are beaten. If all star wideout AJ Brown is quiet, DeVonta Smith will get you. On the ground, D’Andre Swift can run over opponents at will and QB Jalen Hurts is a duel threat weapon in every sense of the word. They have the best record in the NFL and are heading to the playoffs, very likely as the no1 seed in the NFC. This week, they take on another NFC powerhouse, the 49ers, who themselves will be eyeing the NFC 1 seed but may have left it a bit late. In their win over Seattle last week, Christian McCaffrey ran for 114 yards and 2 TDs and with Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk and George Kittle, they have an assortment of options through the air. Add an elite defense, and they are one of the best teams in the league.

Green Bay Packers Kansas City Chiefs
Well, that wasn’t in the script! Green Bay headed for Detroit on Thanksgiving as big underdogs facing a red hot Lions team. The Packers then produced one of their best performances of the season, leaving Ford Field with a 29-22 victory with Jordan Love throwing for 268 yards and 3 TDs and Christian Watson posting 5 receptions for 94 yards and a TD. At 5-6, the Packers are not done yet and they have found some momentum. They welcome the Chiefs to Titletown this week who themselves will be breathing a sigh of relief. There were plenty of questions being asked of Mahomes and the offense before their game against the Raiders, and they answered them with a 31-17 win. Mahomes threw for 298 yards and 2 TDs while Running Back Isiah Pacheco nabbed himself 2 TDs and receiver Rashee Rice had an impressive day, with 107 yards and a TD. If the Chiefs can get more out of their receivers they will remain a strong force, as their defense has played well all year.

Los Angeles Rams Cleveland Browns
The Rams are ascending. After overcoming the division rival Seahawks in week 11, they made it back to back wins in the division with a 37-14 win over the Cardinals. QB Matthew Stafford threw for 229 yards and 4 TDs while returning Running Back Kyren Williams had a career day with 16 carries for 143 yards. The Rams are getting healthier every week and at 5-6 are suddenly right back in the playoff picture. It wasn’t as happy a story for the Browns in week 12, though. With starting QB DeShaun Watson out for the season they are rolling with rookie Dorion-Thompson Robinson. He couldn’t get much going in their defeat to the Broncos and their usually reliable defense gave up 29 points. More worrying for Cleveland was the sight of star DE Myles Garrett in a sling after the game. We await to hear news on that potential injury but this team can’t afford to lose another key player.
