Unification fights always get the juices flowing. For this flyweight bout, Rodriguez puts his WBO title on the line while Edwards’ IBF championship will also be up for grabs. Rodriguez turned pro in 2017 but ‘Bam’ really emerged in 2020, jumping onto the scene with devastating knockout power, with 11 wins coming via stoppage.

To get to this point, Bam beat Carlos Cuadras in February 2022 to claim WBC super flyweight gold and then dominated former champion Srisaket Sor Rungvisai in his first defense. In April, Rodriguez overcame Cristian Gonzalez via unanimous decision to also add the WBO flyweight title to his collection.

It is likely his power and that recent run why Rodrizguez is the favorite (-210). If you feel the power of Bam will be too much for Edwards to handle, you can bet on him to chalk up another knockout (+450).

Edwards is also undefeated, turning pro in 2016 after winning a gold medal at the 2015 England National Championships. He quickly moved up the rankings, winning the British super flyweight title and seamlessly moving up to world level, where he has excelled.

He won his world title, despite being the underdog, against long-reigning champ Moruti Mthalane in 2021. He has since defended his IBF title four times. The last time we saw Edwards in action was in early June when he defeated  Chilean challenger Andres Campos via unanimous decision.

Following that fight, Edwards made it clear he wanted the Rodriguez fight and here we are. Edwards is the underdog (+165) but oddsmakers clearly feel this could be a close one. If you think Edwards can stop the hard hitting Rodriguez, you can wager in him to win via stoppage (+2000).

Rodriguez vs. Edwards Prediction

I would be lying if I said I wasn’t really looking forward to this one. Both of these fighters are excellent technicians, and have yet to taste defeat in their pro careers. The flyweight division is not one that usually draws much attention, but this fight has definitely caught the imagination.

Jesse Rodriguez is the more well-known fighter, having produced some showreel knockouts throughout his career. That sort of explosive power brings attention, and makes fans from around the world sit up and take notice.

It is that power that has made me choose Bam to win by late stoppage. I can see this being a fast paced, intriguing encounter but I just think the power of Rodriguez will get to Edwards in the end and wear him down. If that is the outcome, Bam will surely have to be considered as one of the p4p greats in the sport.
