BetMGM D.C Launch Sees Sports Betting Increase
The BetMGM Sportsbook app is now live in D.C. and has helped the state record an increase in betting activity.
In June, sports wagering in Washington D.C. increased approximately 42% in June due to a surging handle from the William Hill sportsbook and app at Capital One Arena. Last month also saw the BetMGM Sportsbook app go live, launching at Nationals Park. Consequently, bettors now have three options in the district, including the D.C. Lottery’s GambetDC app.
According to the June report, the total sports betting handle in June was $19.5 million, with two operators contributing $16.1 million (William Hill $15.7 million and BetMGM $376,661). Additionally, GambetDC contributed $3.4 million.
June’s total handle was a 41.7% increase over May’s $13.8 million. William Hill accounted for $10.7 million in May in addition to $3.1 million from GambetDC. The online sports betting gross gaming revenue in June was $17 million, a jump of 22.1% from May ($1.4 million).
William Hill Retail Sportsbook at Arena
William Hill’s retail sportsbook opened at the Capital One Arena, home of the NHL’s Capitals and the NBA’s Wizards, opened its doors in May. Bettors can place legal wagers at the William Hill retail sportsbook in addition to using an app in the arena and within a two-block radius around the building.
The temporary William Hill sportsbook that opened in the arena last year was the first sportsbook in a professional sports venue in the United States. It was placed in the arena’s ticket box office area before the permanent one was constructed.
BetMGM App Available at Nationals Park
The BetMGM sportsbook and the Nationals launched a sports betting app on June 10 within a two-block radius of Nationals Park. This provided a flexible wagering option for bettors, especially for MLB betting.
There has not been a new retail sportsbook that has opened at the ballpark yet, but one is expected to open later this summer. It will be constructed outside the centerfield gate at Nationals Park and operate year-round.
It’s about that time @Nationals!

Fans inside the stadium will not be able to access the retail sportsbook but will have the opportunity to wager on the app inside the ballpark. The BetMGM sportsbook app has been highly successful since its debut in the U.S. It has attracted a loyal customer base who enjoy wagering on the go and wagering on the numerous sports betting markets the operator provides. Since its launch, there have been over 100k downloads, and has proved to be one of the most popular sports betting apps in the Google Play Store and iTunes app store.
