Louisiana Sports Betting Background

There have been many hurdles to overcome to legalize sports betting in Louisiana. The emergency rules approved by the LGCB will allow sports betting at casinos throughout the state. This comes after a long battle in the State House and State Senate of Louisiana, where voters were given the opportunity to vote on legalizing sports betting in their parish. The ballot didn’t mention any exclusion or inclusion of online sports gambling, and instead, that final decision was left to regulatory bodies in 2021.

Up to 21 licenses are issued to land-based and riverboat casinos, with two online sports betting skins allowed for each location.

Although the permanent rules aren’t due to be published in 2022, emergency rules remain in place to launch sports betting shortly. However, just deciding on these factors isn’t enough. Lawmakers must pass two bills in total. One Louisiana sports betting bill must deal with the tax rate while the other addresses regulation.

Mobile sports wagering launched in January 2022, which is a big boost to legal sports betting in the state. It means residents can now place a legal sport bet from anywhere in Louisiana.
