Online sports betting is coming to the Louisiana gambling market at some point during the 2021 NFL season.

The Louisiana Gaming Control Board (LGCB) approved emergency rules in August 2021 as part of efforts to bring legal sports betting to the state sooner than residents anticipated. The board agreed to publish more permanent rules surrounding sports betting in Louisiana in January 2022. It is likely the sports wagering laws in the state will follow the same template as other legal US sports betting regulations in other states.

There are multiple casinos spread throughout Louisiana, from riverboat casinos to brick-and-mortar locations. Additionally, 55 of Louisiana’s 64 parishes will soon have online legal sports wagering at their disposal. Each of the 55 parishes with legal sports wagering will have the chance to bet online with access to mobile sports betting Louisiana options once the sports betting Louisiana market officially launches.

It is hoped that the state will have Louisiana sports betting apps available in 2021 during the NFL season.

The above online sportsbooks are all ready to go when the Louisiana sports betting online launch is confirmed.

Louisiana Sports Betting Background

There have been many hurdles to overcome to legalize sports betting in Louisiana. The emergency rules approved by the LGCB will allow sports betting at casinos throughout the state. This comes after a long battle in the State House and State Senate of Louisiana, where voters were given the opportunity to vote on legalizing sports betting in their parish. The ballot didn’t mention any exclusion or inclusion of online sports gambling, and instead, that final decision was left to regulatory bodies in 2021.

Up to 21 licenses are issued to land-based and riverboat casinos, with two online sports betting skins allowed for each location.

Although the permanent rules aren’t due to be published in 2022, emergency rules remain in place to launch sports betting shortly. However, just deciding on these factors isn’t enough. Lawmakers must pass two bills in total. One Louisiana sports betting bill must deal with the tax rate while the other addresses regulation.

Details on when sports bettors in Louisiana will have access to mobile sports wagering have not been finalized yet.  However, this news is ultimately good for bettors. It means legal sports betting is coming, even if it may be some months away.

Top Louisiana Online Sportsbooks

Based on the existing state of play in the Louisiana betting scene, the below is a snapshot of what sports betting apps and sites could launch in the state. If Louisiana launches in-person retail sportsbooks first, online sports betting sites will soon follow.

Any operator entering the online betting industry in Louisiana must secure access via a partnership with one of the state’s casinos. For example, WynnBet Louisiana sports betting market access was secured through a deal with a physical location owned by Caesars.

How to place a bet in Louisiana

We are still waiting for final details on how the sports betting industry in Louisiana will look. We don’t know yet whether Louisiana will require players to register at a partnered casino in person before they can place a bet at a mobile sportsbook.

Players cannot use commercial sportsbooks on tribal lands. This means several online apps, like BetMGM and DraftKings, will be geofenced out of use in these areas, which is the case in the nine parishes that voted to reject sports betting. Any mobile wagering activity in that location will be operated exclusively by the tribe and their sports betting partner.

Aside from that, the registration process for online sportsbooks is straightforward, and players can be signed up and betting within minutes.

Registration Steps

Once you have chosen which site you would like to join, you need to register for the sportsbook and provide the operator with personal information to verify your identity. This information will include full name, physical address, date of birth, and Social Security number.

If the state requires in-person registration, you must visit the partnered land-based or riverboat casino that works in tandem with your sportsbook app. There you can verify your identity and complete the registration process. It will be easier for players if online registration is legal as it will save them from making the trip to a land-based or riverboat casino.

Once your identity has been verified, you then need to fund your account using one of the payment methods offered by the sportsbook. All of the best sports betting sites provide fast and efficient payment services such as PayPal and online bank transfer, so this shouldn’t be a problem.

Once money has been added to your account, you can navigate through your chosen sportsbook to the market or betting line you are interested in and start betting. To do this, click the odds, enter your bet, then add it to your betslip to lock in your wager.
