Legal sports wagering has passed in the State Congress. Leading up to this launch, online sportsbooks applied for licenses through the Louisiana Gaming Control Board. There are up to 41 online sportsbooks and 20 retail sportsbooks coming to the Pelican State. Each one of the 55 parishes with legal sports wagering will have the possibility to bet online with regulated and licensed online sportsbooks in Louisiana once the online sports betting launch is triggered. The LGCB approved emergency rules in August, and operators have been given the green light to launch their mobile sports betting apps on Friday, January 28.
June 2019: The first try at a gambling law, including sports betting, fails. After creating a bill for daily fantasy sports contests, legislators tried to sneak sports betting on there, which failed.

There have been many hurdles to overcome to legalize sports betting in Louisiana. The emergency rules approved by the LGCB will allow sports betting at casinos throughout the state. This comes after a long battle in the State House and State Senate of Louisiana, where voters were given the opportunity to vote on legalizing sports betting in their parish. The ballot didn’t mention any exclusion or inclusion of online sports gambling, and instead, that final decision was left to regulatory bodies in 2021.
Up to 21 licenses are issued to land-based and riverboat casinos, with two online sports betting skins allowed for each location.
Although the permanent rules aren’t due to be published in 2022, emergency rules remain in place to launch sports betting shortly. However, just deciding on these factors isn’t enough. Lawmakers must pass two bills in total. One Louisiana sports betting bill must deal with the tax rate while the other addresses regulation.
Mobile sports wagering launched in January 2022, which is a big boost to legal sports betting in the state. It means residents can now place a legal sport bet from anywhere in Louisiana.
Based on the existing state of play in the Louisiana betting scene, the below is a snapshot of what sports betting apps and sites could launch in the state. The above 6 operators are already live and available in the state and it is widely anticipated the below operators will launch in the next few months:
Any operator entering the online betting industry in Louisiana must secure access via a partnership with one of the state’s casinos. For example, WynnBet Louisiana sports betting market access was secured through a deal with a physical location owned by Caesars.
With the competition in Louisiana increasing, each Louisiana sports betting site must offer a generous welcome bonus in addition to ongoing promotions to convince bettors to choose their platform.
Mobile and online operators have made placing a bet easier than ever. Remote registration is allowed in Louisiana so new customers can join and bet straight from their mobile or computer. Placing a bet is easy.
Sign up for a sportsbook account, any of the operators listed on this page are licensed and legal in LA so you can deposit and withdraw in confidence. In 2021, lawmakers began the task of enacting the will of voters who approved legal sports betting in Louisiana in 2020. The current regulatory framework includes 20 sports betting licenses. These licenses allow the state’s 20 casinos to operate online and retail sports wagering, including up to two mobile brands apiece.
The Louisiana Lottery also has a sports betting license, which will offer online sports betting. There are already some notable retail casino sportsbooks in the state including:
L’auberge Casino & Hotel Baton Rouge (Barstool)
Boomtown Bossier City Casino (Barstool)
Horseshoe Bossier City Hotel & Casino (Caesars)
Paragon Casino Resort Marksville (Betfred)
Football is the primary sport that fans follow in the state of Louisiana. The Pelican State has arguably three significant sports teams, two of which are professional and one collegiate.
The New Orleans Saints have reached the playoffs nine teams and won one Super Bowl since head coach Sean Payton, and legendary quarterback Drew Brees joined the team in 2006. Brees retired following the conclusion of the 2020 season, finishing his career with several offensive records, including multiple Offensive Player of the Year awards and a Super Bowl MVP.
When sports betting launches, we expect sportsbooks to be taking tons of cash on these Saints. NFL bets are one of the most prominent forms of wagers, and the Saints are a massive organization with a stellar history in the NFC South.
The LSU Tigers are a huge sports team known globally. In 2019, LSU won a National Title with current NFL star Joe Burrow leading the Tigers to glory. It remains to be seen if the Louisiana Gaming Control Board will allow for college sports betting so residents can bet on LSU games.
Hidden behind the popularity of the Saints mentioned above and Tigers, the New Orleans Pelicans of the NBA are rising to become of the better teams in basketball. NBA bets are massive in the US, and wagering on the Pelicans will be a big feature of Louisiana sports betting.
