theScore Bet app NJ
There’s a new entry into the ever-growing New Jersey mobile sports betting app market which has been grabbing our attention of late: theScore Bet.
With the football season now well and truly underway and a new NBA season on the horizon, now seems like as good a time as any to give this purpose built app a proper review, but first here’s a little info on the company behind it. Available for Android & iPhone, can this new kid on the block take on the old guard? Let’s see!
theScore, a media company founded by John Levy and based in Toronto, Canada, debuted its mobile sports app in 2007 and it has since become hugely popular in North America. They have recently launched a new wagering app that is fast and simple to use. The sports app makes a fine job of connecting its large fan base to comprehensive real-time scoring updates, lightning-fast alerts, breaking news, in-game stats, videos, and social content and of course, now legal wagering.
Monmouth Park Racetrack, located in Oceanport, NJ, provides the license under which theScore can operate in New Jersey, and the company’s other partnership is with technology provider Bet-Works, with that company tasked with building a sports betting platform from scratch.
So how did they get on and is it worth downloading? Just two questions we’ve been asking ourselves since its launch in early September and we’ll endeavor to answer those – and any other questions you might have – in our comprehensive guide.
Bettors in NJ who read our guide will find out not only how to download theScore Bet app, regardless of their make of cell phone and operating system, but also what it offers them in the form of user experience (UX), features, banking options, welcome offers and promos.
In what is a burgeoning market, and an increasingly crowded one for operators, it’s important to stand out from the competition and that’s what we’re aiming to determine here, so that you can make an informed decision over whether to download it. Anyone in the United States can download it and sign up, but you need to be aged 21 or older and physically located inside the state of New Jersey to be able to place a wager and cash out a bet. The good news is that your mobile device will already have the required geo-locating software installed to determine your exact location.
But first you will need to enable Location permissions on your device and here’s how to do that.
iOS: Settings –> Privacy –> Location Services. Find theScore Bet and Allow Location Access
Android: Settings –> Apps and Notifications. Find theScore Bet. Tap on Permissions and toggle on Location
You can’t browse any markets, see any score or place any bets on the Android or iOS platform until you are signed in. theScore do not currently operate a mobile site, only downloadable apps so if you want to bet with theScore, you will need to download the app, sign up and sign in before placing any wagers.
Once downloaded, you can go ahead and create your account and here’s what you’ll need handy. Your personal info: full legal name, age and last four digits of your Social Security Number.
Your contact info: residential address and cell number.
It only took us a couple of minutes to set things up and the process of getting a bet on was as easy as 1-2-3:
- Fund your account – we’ll get on to the banking options in due course.
- Find the sport and bet type you want.
- Place your pre-game bet and/or follow along to bet live as the game unfolds.
Step #3 is where the advantages of partnering the sports app – theScore – with the betting app – theScore Bet – really shines through and, in our opinion, takes mobile wagering to the next level. Here are three reasons why:
Cross-app bet tracking – Place a bet and then track its progress in the sports app via data and alerts in real time.
Make it personal – Select your favorite teams and leagues in the sports app and they will automatically get highlighted in the betting app, with recommended bets appearing on the home screen.
Always know the score – Real-time scoring and live odds movements will align to your live matchup experience between both apps, so you’ll always know how your bets are performing.
The syncing of the two apps provides what we consider to be the perfect combination of sports and betting. But don’t take our word for it!
theScore Bet Mode
It’s also worth mentioning at this stage that users of theScore sports app have the option to switch on the Bet Mode feature – simply head to the Profile page (top-left icon) to activate.
It’s well worth doing this as once turned, you’ll get instant access to the fastest possible score updates, real-time odds and additional betting content. There’s no need to pull-to-refresh either.
All of these benefits are available on both the Android & iPhone version of the application. They are identical in terms of looks and functionality.
We all like some free money to get us started and theScore Bet delivered in that respect as they matched our first deposit with a free bet up to $100.
It’s not hard to get hold of this free bet and here’s how:
- Download the app
- Create your account
- Make your first deposit
- Get your initial deposit matched 100% up to a maximum value of $100
Terms and conditions apply here, of course, but there is nothing too restrictive in there.
There’s a tasty promo for existing customers too:
Bet a 4+ Leg Parlay of $20 or more, Get a $10 Free Bet
That’s exactly as it sounds and you can wager the free bet any way you like – hedge your initial bet perhaps? – but the $10 is not included in any returns.
There’s also the promise that users of theScore Bet will get access to exclusive betting offers and rewards. This is clearly designed to get users coming back and using the app on a regular basis. But hey, we’re not complaining!
So let’s delve a little deeper into what theScore Bet has to offer sports bettors in terms of experience. First up, we’ll say the betting interface is very easy-looking on the eye, albeit some may not take to the black background straight away, and navigation is a breeze. Nice job, Brick.Works.
There’s also a comprehensive range of bet types to choose from and naturally these include: Moneyline, Points Spreads, Totals, Parlay Bets, Props, Teasers & Round Robins. Drill down a bit further and you will find a lot more bets that are specific to the sport you’re interested in.
We found placing our bets easy. A simple case of tapping on your selection and adding it to your betslip, which displays on an easy-to-read white background.
You can either place straight up bets or tap on +ADD MORE BETS to build your parlay, before deciding how much you want to wager. Tap on Place Bet and you’re on.
This is where it gets real fun and especially if you have both theScore Bet AND theScore sports app, for the reasons already given.
When you consider that the majority of bets on any game these days are placed live, once the action gets underway, any betting app not geared up for live betting is not going to cut it, and we can say with some certainty that doesn’t apply to theScore Bet.
The tech behind it is truly impressive and we’d go as far as saying it’s industry-leading, with lightning-fast score updates and live odds movements that would put other apps to shame.
Cashing out, in case you’re wondering, allows you to settle on an open bet before the bet is settled based on the final outcome and is now included as standard in all NJ gambling apps, with theScore Bet being no exception.
You can view your available cash out options on the ‘My Bets’ page. Here you can check out all your open bets along with live scoring information and, providing cash out is being offered at the time, a blue ‘Cash Out $$$’ button will appear displaying the total return. Tap the button to proceed with the cash out and confirm.
What could be improved on the app?
It’s hard to pick fault with what is a very impressive app. Okay, we’ve seen more sports and markets available elsewhere – the bet365 NJ app springs to mind – but it’s still early days for theScore and any wrinkles will soon be ironed out, or else they will lose bettors to the competition.
That we can’t bet on any in-state college teams is an inconvenience of course, but we’re used to that by now as it’s the same for all NJ apps due to state regulations.
As for a lack of casino and poker options, that’s easily forgiven as they do the sportsbook side of exceptionally well and we can always go elsewhere for those.
Well, for starters there is a Help Center on the website/app, which includes How to Bet and Accounts sections, and if you’re question isn’t covered in the FAQs or via a search option, you can always submit a request. Here’s how to contact them directly:
We couldn’t find a Live Chat option but we’d wager that slight inconvenience won’t last for long.
All the usual payment options are available and, just for the record, we’ve listed these below.
- Credit & Debit cards
- Visa & MasterCard
- Play+ Card
- Cash at the Monmouth Park Racetrack & Casino
- E Wallets
There is one other payment option open to users and that is to head to Monmouth Park Racetrack, where you can both deposit and withdraw funds – simply provide your username and some form of ID, such as a driver’s license.
Something else worth noting for the bigger bettors among us is that in order to deposit more than $2,500 cumulative, you will need to first upload and verify your government issued ID. This is also required prior to withdrawing any amount.
As for actually depositing and withdrawing, this is all handled via your ‘Wallet’, which is located in the ‘My Account’ section at the top right of the home screen.
Deposits can either be instantaneous or take up to three business days, depending on the method selected. The same goes for withdrawals and, from our experience, the longest we had to wait was four business days. A little room for improvement there, perhaps.
Responsible Gambling with theScore
We like how this app takes their patron protection and responsible gambling seriously as, let’s be honest, we’re not all able to do that all of the time.
With this in mind, they’ve set some tools right into their app to help you set your own limits and ‘play smart’.
Daily Time Limit – set a limit on the time you spend on the app per day
Deposit Limits – set a limit on how much you can deposit daily, weekly, or monthly
Spend Limit – as per above
Cool Off – take a break (a number of days) from playing with them
Self Exclusion – for when you know it’s time to stop gambling altogether
Our final thoughts
We’re picky when it comes to NJ Sportsbook apps and we downloaded this one with high expectations, given theScore are experts in delivering mobile device-first sports content. It was just a case of whether their software provider, Bet.Works, could deliver on what was their first attempt at a mobile betting platform. The answer is a resounding ‘yes’.
Indeed, we’d wager good money theScore is going to make a big splash in the New Jersey online/mobile sports betting market and, given the company behind it has access to 11 additional states via its partnership with Penn National Gaming, we doubt it will be its only live book before too long.
So what are you waiting for, all you NJ sports bettors? Download the app and start betting today.
