Unibet Mobile App Set For Pennsylvania Launch
The Kindred Group is further expanding its footprint in the US with plans to launch a mobile app under its flagship Unibet brand in Pennsylvania next month.
The Stockholm-based company already operates a Unibet-branded retail sportsbook in the state through a partnership with the Mohegan Sun Pocono land-based casino, with the first bets being placed in September.
The Unibet Sportsbook is powered by Stockholm counterpart Kambi, an international B2B provider of premium end-to-end sports betting services, which has also been focusing on the rapid US expansion of late.
Unibet New Jersey customer bets big
Unibet already has both a retail and online presence in New Jersey through the Hard Rock Atlantic City’s license, and it’s sportsbook has seen a ton of action since opening, not least a $1 million wager by Jim McIngvale, or “Mattress Mack” as he likes to be known, on the Houston Astros to win the World Series. The Unibet NJ Sportsbook app has gone down well as it’s casino counterpart – the Unibet casino app.
That was the biggest bet ever made in the Garden State by the operator and they almost certainly face a large payout – the Astros are one win away from the title at the time of writing – but on the flip side, they got viral marketing boost as result.
Unibet partnerships come at cost
Unibet has been busy elsewhere in the US, signing agreements with high-profile sports teams, including a multi-year sponsorship deal with the NHL’s New Jersey Devils and a partnership with MLS’s Philadelphia Union.
They also signed Hall of Fame Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur to act as brand ambassador in New Jersey.
While all of these deals come with a start up cost, they will serve the purpose of promoting the brand further and increasing traffic to their sites and retail outlets.
CEO Henrik Tjärnström has said the company expects to lose money as it invests in its U.S. business, which includes the compliance price tag that comes with working in regulated markets, but that revenue will only grow as a result in the longer term.
DraftKings coming to Pennsylvania
News of Unibet’s impending online launch is not the only fresh rumors circulating in Pennsylvania, as there’s talk that there will also be a launch of the DraftKings mobile app in the state next month.
The operator has experience of running a successful online sportsbook in New Jersey since August 2018, and more recently it launched mobile apps in West Virginia and Indiana to great acclaim, so there’s no reason why it shouldn’t fare well in PA too.
The Keystone State is setting up to be a powerhouse in the online sports and casino markets, with almost $200 million in wagers being recorded in September – up 78% from August’s previous record of $109 million. We covered this story last week in our recent news post about the success of gambling in Pennsylvania.
The lion’s share of that is coming from online/mobile gambling – it contributed a reported $158 million in handle last month – and the addition of a fifth online sportsbook in DraftKings can only boost those numbers further, as well as giving bettors a further option.
