Carson Wentz to miss 5-12 after undergoing surgery

Carson Wentz

The Indianapolis Colts are still more than a month away from their first regular-season game, but the injuries have already started to pile up.

Quarterback Carson Wentz will miss between 5-12 weeks after undergoing surgery to repair an injured ankle.

The injury occurred during a play in practice on Thursday, and Wentz immediately knew that something was wrong. According to the team, it was an old injury that caused this new damage as a portion of the bone came loose.

Wentz was brought to Indianapolis in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles, and he was immediately named the starting quarterback. Phillip Rivers was under center for the Colts last season but decided to retire after leading the Colts to the AFC Playoffs.

Wentz sought out the opinion of a number of different doctors before decided to go ahead and have the surgery. The team continued to get the same opinion from multiple doctors, and all of them suggested removing the portion of the bone so that there are no further problems.

After the surgery, Wentz will be resting for at least two weeks before beginning the rehabilitation process. The Colts are expected to have a better idea of the return timetable after that rehab process has started.

Wentz has proven that he can battle through injuries, but the Colts are not going to push their starting quarterback into a quick return. If Wentz is able to bounce back quicker than normal then there is a chance that he could miss just one or two games.

Making things even worse for the Colts is the fact that the front portion of their schedule is loaded with great teams. Four of the first five opponents for the Colts this season were in the playoffs in 2020.

Indianapolis now has four quarterbacks on the roster, but only Brett Hundley has attempted a pass in the NFL.

Colts to Call Bears?

Now that it has been announced that Wentz is set to miss a long period of time, the Colts are expected to search for a new quarterback option. NFL experts and insiders believe that these conversations will start with a call to the Chicago Bears.

Nick Foles is currently the third-string quarterback in Chicago, and the Bears have been looking for a team to take on his salary. Foles was brought to Chicago to be the starting quarterback a season ago but played his way out of a job. The Bears have signed a string of partnership deals over the last few months with some high-profile operators, including one with BetRivers and operator PointsBet.

Frank Reich was the offensive coordinator in 2017 when it was Foles that led the Eagles to a Super Bowl title. Ironically enough, Wentz was the starting quarterback in Philadelphia that season but was forced out of the lineup due to injury.

Foles told the media on Monday that he would like to have some input on any trade talks that he is involved in, but was not aware of any taking place at this time. There are other options out there on the quarterback market, but few of them have the knowledge and familiarity with Reich and his offense.
