Detroit Lions Join Forces With BetMGM
The Detroit Lions have announced that they have signed BetMGM as their official partner
Things are starting to heat up in the NFL world as the season is due to get underway this week. Things are also taking shape off the field as the Detroit Lions became the latest team to announce a significant sports betting deal. The Lions have announced they have inked a deal with BetMGM, with the sports operator set to become an official partner. BetMGM is one of the most well-known betting operators globally and is a part of MGM Resorts International. This is not the first such deal BetMGM has signed with a professional sports team; however, it is the first deal with a betting company for Detroit.
Upon announcing the agreement last week, Detroit revealed that this is a joint venture between BetMGM and GVC Holdings. The NFL franchise has been on the lookout for an official sports betting partner and have timed it perfectly with the 2020 season just around the corner.
BetMGM announced a similar agreement with the Denver Broncos in June; however, partnering with the Lions makes perfect sense for commercial reasons. The company has one casino in Detroit, the MGM Grand, one of just three casinos in the city.
As part of this new arrangement, BetMGM will promote its brand through signage, which will be on show on game days. Although no fans are allowed in stadiums for the entirety of the season, MGM will still receive plenty of exposure. The deal has been described as a multi-year partnership, although no financial details have been disclosed. BetMGM will also have full involvement with popular promotions currently offered by the Lions. The sports betting operator has been named as the official sponsor of Lions Bingo and Lions Perks.
Sports Betting Expanding in Michigan
Sports betting was officially launched in Michigan in March, unfortunate timing when you consider this was around the time live sport came to a shuddering halt because of Coronavirus. Consequently, the betting industry was hammered, with revenue for the summer falling well below projected totals.
As mentioned above, there are three commercial casinos in Detroit. These properties are expecting a considerable uptick in betting activity coinciding with the start of the 2020 NFL season. Residents of the state will recognize the name of BetMGM, and it is the most popular casino. The operator is hoping that even if sports betting does not have the expected recovery, they can still enjoy some success with Lions Bingo. This promotion was introduced last year, and BetMGM will be offering some massive prizes during the season.
Online Betting in Pipeline for Michigan
Online betting is set to go live in Michigan imminently, which will be a big boost for the industry. It is likely the case that sports betting was slow to get off the ground because customers must currently visit the casinos to place bets.
Some of the industry’s biggest operators already have a presence in the Wolverine State, and more will follow if and when the state eventually legalizes mobile betting. The rapid growth in sports betting can be put down to mobile betting being very popular.
