Green Bay Packers at Chicago Bears Betting Preview
The football season is back!
College football kicked off two weeks ago, and now the NFL season is upon us. What a better start to the year than a Thursday Night Football matchup with the Green Bay Packers visiting the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field.
The two teams opened up the 2018 season at Lambeau Field. In that game, Aaron Rodgers went down, and it seemed like he might be out for the year. But Rodgers came back in the second half of the game and led the charge for a comeback 24-23 victory. The Packers lost at Soldier Field later in the year 24-17.
Two historic franchises locked in a bitter rivalry: it doesn’t get much better than this. This article will help breakdown the betting matchup between the two teams and help you to lock in your picks. NJ players can check out our pick of the best New Jersey Football Sportsbooks right here
Is Chicago A Super Bowl Contender?
The Bears come into this season with high expectations once again after a 12-4 finish in 2018. They claimed their first NFC North title since 2010 and were looking like a favorite in the playoffs.
Due to their constant kicking woes, they came up short against the Philadelphia Eagles and Nick Foles in the opening round.
With that disappointment behind them, the Bears are ready to take a legitimate shot at the title once again. Quarterback Mitch Trubisky has steadily improved, and head coach Matt Nagy has made more use of their weapons as each season has gone along.
The Bears’ defense is still just as good this season, headlined by All-Pro linebacker Khalil Mack. This team led the league in takeaways in 2018, so expect more of that in 2019.
Will A New Head Coach Help The Pack?
Green Bay has had one of the best weapons in all of football in quarterback Aaron Rodgers. But even with such a premier quarterback in the NFL, Green Bay has struggled to get over the hump in its past couple of seasons.
One of the main problems they were facing was their defense. The Packers spent much of the offseason reinforcing their secondary and patching up holes in their defensive line. They have set the framework to have an improved defensive season.
With Aaron Jones healthy and fully available, the Green Bay run game will be locked in and ready to go. Rodgers will have more help this season, and the run game will open up more space for receivers down the field.
Betting Lines And The Pick
The Chicago Bears are favored at home at -3. The moneyline has Chicago at -165, which is begging you to take the Packers at +145.
All betting lines aside for a moment, and you are looking at two of the most evenly matched teams in the NFL. Add in the fact that it is the season opener and how big the rivalry is between Chicago and Green Bay, and you will be looking at a crazy game in store for the viewers.
With all the question marks on this NFL season, Chicago’s defensive dominance is not up for debate. They will be looking to destroy Rodgers and all of the Packers in this game.
After the nail-biting season opener last year, Rodgers will come out poised and ready to play. This game will be close and down to the wire, and when games are down to the wire, a team needs its kicker. Chicago’s kicking struggles have leaked into the preseason, and that is why I am taking Green Bay at +3. I think their moneyline is excellent value too when the teams are evenly matched.
Green Bay wins 24-20. Lock it in.
