History of Sports Betting in Maine

Sports fans had their fair share of waiting for sports betting to become legal in Maine.

The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 made sports betting illegal nationwide, except for retail sportsbooks in Nevada. The move was controversial and not without huge repercussions. Finally, the Supreme Court decided to repeal its ban on online and retail sports betting, instead giving each state the authority to decide independently on whether gambling should be legalized or remain illegal.

However, the road was complicated for Maine. The initial push to open sportsbooks in Maine was shot down by Governor Mills, but after consideration and due diligence, the senate concluded that sports betting could be legalized, on the condition that sportsbooks were partnered with the local tribal nations. Collectively known as the Wabanaki, the Maliseet, Passamaquoddy and Penobscot tribes would be given the rights to sell betting and gambling products. DraftKings and Caesars made deals with the Passamaquoddy Tribe to advertise and sell their betting products in the state of Maine, and were ready to take bets from Mainers on the official launch date of the sports betting legalization act.

Though the green light was given for the sportsbooks to launch back in 2022, bettors had to wait over a year for the official launch of the Maine online sportsbooks. Initially, it was due to a lack of interest from the sportsbooks, which did not see the potential of opening their services to the Maine sports betting market. This all changed in 2023, when DraftKings and Caesars partnered with the Passamaquoddy Tribe with the approval of the Maine Gambling Control Board.
